As many of the substances on the Prohibited List were originally developed for medicinal purposes, there may still be a requirement for athletes to take these substances as part of their medical treatment. A Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) is the mechanism used to allow athletes take these substances without committing an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV).

This unit explains the TUE process as well as the developments in medicine of gene therapy and how this may impact the world of sport.

Recent developments in sport science have made it possible to make significant performance improvements without doping. As well as explaining what athletes cannot and should not do in terms of doping, it is just as important to educate people about how performance can be improved legitimately. An overview is provided in this section.
